Projects are happening simultaneously now. While the inside was getting new walls, the exterior was also getting a whole house makeover. After so many months of looking like an unfinished construction project, the exterior is starting to look close to complete. We elected to use hardi-plank siding, officially known as James Hardie Cement Board, to give the house the vintage painted lapboard look, while using contemporary and extremly durable materials. We chose wider planks with a wood grain look. The hardi-plank boards come primed and unexpectedly, the primer was not white, but a sandy beachy-looking color. The home still has to be painted, so this is not the final color, but everyone who sees the house thinks that this is the color we've chosen. We have had so many compliments and comments on the color that we briefly considered matching up the color when we actually do paint. On balance, though, this isn't the color we want so the house will get a color change in the near future and those who don't realize this is just a primer coat are sure to think that we are nuts changing the color so quickly.
On to the progress - first to be outfitted with the new hardi-plank siding were the dormers:
Then, the "skirt board" was carefully added to the bottom of the home.
Then the planks were carefully installed.
The rear of the house is looking good.
Check out the new porch ceilings (bead board that will be painted or stained):
And, Rob was busy installing the new basement glass block windows:
